Each year Salon Iris sponsor people who want to make a difference in this world, in 2014 we sponsored Joanne Horton for the Staffordshire Scout Kenya Project.
We asked Joanne to do a write up of her trip for us, so continue reading to find out the amazing work our sponsored people do.
In 2013 I had been given the news that I have been successful in being offered a place on the Staffordshire Scout Kenya Project.
I have been a Beaver Scout Leader in Polesworth for approx. 8 years at the time I feel privileged to have been given this opportunity to fulfill my scouting promise by helping deprived young people in another country.
This was an exciting opportunity not only for me but for a group of young scouts to learn new skills, experience new challenges and gain an understanding about new cultures away from home.
The project was to replace the existing Good News Children’s Home in the Shika Adabu/Likoni area along the Likoni-Diani Road on the South Coast of Mombasa, which is the home to 50 orphans, their current home which is in rented accommodation is in a poor condition.
Over the next 12 months prior to going I leant new skills, bricklaying, carpentry and plumbing as part of the project and then I went out in Easter 2014 to physically construct the new build.
The youngsters who had also been successful in being selected are a credit to the youth of today not only will they be learning new skills for the future, great for their CV for when they reach an age to be applying for work but they are also giving up their time to commit to the added challenge alongside myself of raising £3000 each to build the home without the support of local businesses like Salon Iris this wouldn’t have been possible, the boys Moved into the home in 2016 and are now working the land, attending school and have a future.
